Willow Coffins Handcrafted with Love and Attention to Detail in Hampshire
Willow Coffin Weaving Service
Mollie’s coffins are made to order for your loved one. This most significant vessel is truly sustainable and made with minimal impact on the land. Mollie turned to making willow coffins in response to her experience of making a sweet chestnut bark coffin at the request from a client.
Although her love of working with bark, the quantities needed for a coffin were not practical to hand harvest on this scale. Willow is perfectly suited to coffin making being pliable and strong when woven together. It was through this commission that she was moved to become part of the process of helping people in their grief.
Mollie hopes that with a positive purpose, creativity and care, she can create for you, a meaningful vessel for the end of life.

Willow is perfectly suited to coffin making being pliable and strong when woven together.
Willow is a truly environmentally renewable resource and has been used in Britain for weaving coffins since the late 19 Century. The willow plant can grow up to 12ft in height per year and can be harvested annually from the same crown for up to 60 years. Growing willow is actually carbon negative, trapping carbon under the soil.
Most of the willow Mollie uses for coffins is grown on the Somerset Levels by family run farms, she also aims to use elements of tree bark, her own home grown willow and other plant fibres all of which are gathered locally.
Mollie lines her coffins with biodegradable materials, which are suitable for burial and cremation. Every part of our coffins are compostable and are lined with waterproof biodegradable calico, no harmful chemicals are produced during cremation.
-
All of our coffins have a woven base; the coffin is then lined with thick recycled cardboard and finished with waterproof biodegradable calico and a small pillow is provided filled with local raw sheep wool. Hemp rope is used for the handles and hazel rods are used for the fixings and part of structure of the lid.
A coffin can be personalised with plant materials or tree bark included in the weave.
For many woodland burials many families take part in decorating the coffin at the funeral. This can be a very beautiful process, aiding grieving and sharing the experience.

A beautifully made ash casket is just as important as a coffin, and there are plenty of options for these precious vessels. Willow, bark and plant materials can be used to create a beautiful container for your loved one’s ashes.
All ash caskets come lined with cotton calico, unless otherwise requested.

To take part in the creation of your loved ones coffin or ash casket can be beneficial to the grieving process. You are welcome to take part in weaving the coffin, or if you’d prefer, simply come to Mollie’s workshop and witness the process.
For ash caskets and depending on the time of year, opportunities for harvesting materials for weaving can be arranged. This is a wonderful reciprocal experience with the natural world.
If you would like to participate, please allow more time for this before the funeral date. Contact Mollie to discuss this option as soon as you can and we can talk about how you would like to be involved.
